If you use kaffa as your primary VM, thus it is known problem of this platform. java.net.* is not implemented correctly in kaffa.

no, Sun JDK 1.4.0, 1.4.1 has same problems

Then contact Sun directly or read their 'known issues'. My Sun JKD 1.4 works perfectly under both Windows and Solaris. I have just tested your problem under them.
